The featured event was an exhibition from Antartica. Apparently there was a Japanese research team that went. This is a replica of their room and some pictures of the inside of one of the vehicles they used:
This was a really cool display of some animals from Antartica. These are real stuffed hides! We went back later and took a picture with me and DJ standing in front of it. Unfortunately, there wasn't much time so we didn't have time to think about positioning and couldn't get a very good picture...:

This museum is somewhere near Mitsukaido. I have no idea how far it is from Mito... But it's about an hour from here. You can see their homepage at www.nat.pref.ibaraki.jp It is all in Japanese, though... The cost is not bad. But if you go, you might want to plan to spend the entire day there. Maybe even bring lunch. It's REALLY big and has a HUGE outdoor section that includes a bog!!
